Lacking melatonin may make sleep a struggle

One of the more commonly known supplements for natural sleep, melatonin may be able to assist you. What is it, and how can it do so?

What

Melatonin is actually a hormone produced naturally by the body. It isn't directly responsible for putting you to sleep, but it does signal other systems in the body that it is time to sleep. High levels of melatonin are most common when it becomes dark, and it's no coincidence that this is the time most people are trying to fall asleep.

So how does it help you sleep?

While melatonin doesn't directly put you to sleep, it does promote sleep by regulating things like heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature. It also binds to receptors in the brain that help reduce nerve activity. So even though it isn't a knockout punch like many prescription medications, melatonin is essential for the body to be ready for sleep.

Deficiency can happen

Melatonin deficiency can be the result of age, stress, smoking, work schedule, not getting enough natural light during the day, as well as too much light at night. That last one has become a larger problem in recent years, as people tend to spend more time on their phones, tablets, and computers, right before going to bed.

In cases of deficiency, or irregular sleep schedule, a melatonin supplement may help get the body prepared for sleep, and lead you to a better nights rest.
