Saw Palmetto is a palm native to the southeastern United States. It is commonly used in supplements to support prostate health, and other conditions that may affect older men. While it is believed to have multiple benefits, it's most commonly used as a treatment for BPH, benign prostatic hypertrophy.
BPH, a condition also known as Enlarged Prostate, is a common condition in older men. The most common symptoms of enlarged prostate include; frequent or urgent need to urinate, increased frequency of urination at night (also known as nocturia), difficulty starting urination, weak urine stream or a stream that stops and starts, dribbling at the end of urination, or an inability to completely empty the bladder. In some cases, it may also cause urinary tract infections, an inability to urinate, or result in blood in the urine.
It is believed the enlargement of the prostate is caused by hormone changes as men grow older. With symptoms rarely seen in men under 40, but are reported in about 50% of men over 80.
Saw Palmetto and BPH
Several studies have shown supplementation of Saw Palmetto extract, both alone and in conjunction with other herbs, may help reduce the symptoms of BPH. This is believed to be due to the possible effect this herb has on slowing prostate growth, and reducing inflammation.
Natural Testosterone - It is believed Saw Palmetto may help reduce the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Preventing this conversion maintains the level of testosterone in the body more efficiently.
Hair Loss - In addition to maintaining testosterone, there is evidence that reducing DHT may help fight androgenic alopecia, a condition known more commonly as male pattern hair loss.
If you're a male, over the age of 40, Saw Palmetto may be a beneficial supplement to consider. Here are a few products we carry.
